Anton LaVey founded and ran the Church of Satan from the 'Black House', his home in San Francisco. LaVey was High Pope of the Church of Satan from 1966 until his death in 1997. Some photos of the Black House Altar are available on the Church of Satan website. The Black House was demolished on 2001 Oct 17. When I was in SanFrancisco in 2001 I climbed the slow hill of California Street until I reached house 6114, and took some last photos of this diabolical abode.
Peter Gilmore wrote a brief obituary to the house in "The Satanic Scriptures" (2007):
“For the past several years, the Black House at 6114 California Street sat empty and brooding, the quintessential "shunned house." [...] It was not meant to survive the death of the unique owner who had given it preternatural life. [...] With Dr. LaVey as its genius loci, it became a nexus point for those who shared his Satanic sensibilities. It was truly an "unholy of unholies" for the select group of sinister individuals who were fortunate enough to be invited to cross its threshold and pass through the stygian pall of the entry hallway. Those of us who enjoyed many hours in its tenebrous embrace will never forget its charm - and its mysteries.”
